Credit Card Assignments & Mystery Shopping

Credit Card Assignments & Mystery Shopping

Mystery shoppers love the chance to earn big bucks, but often the higher paying assignments require more personal involvement and a larger time commitment from you. One of the more frequently encountered assignments that pay more than your average assignment are those that require you to open a credit account or other such account. These assignments may be for a credit card company, a major retailer, a bank, or other such company. In order to fulfill these assignments, you will be required to actually open a new account. This means that your credit report will be pulled, and your credit scenario going forward may be affected as well. So should you open a new account simply to complete a mystery shopping assignment?

They find companies with assignments available, and send them straight to you.

Pulling Credit. In order to open a new credit card or similar type of account, your credit report will need to be pulled. First, you will need to know that you have decent enough credit to be approved for the new account. If there is a concern, you should discuss it with the provider before you accept the assignment. When a new credit report is pulled, it does have the ability to affect your credit scores. If you haven’t had your credit report pulled in recent months and your score is good, you should not worry about this. However, if you already have a lower than average score, you may want to think twice about this. Simply pulling your credit report, especially if it has been pulled several other times in recent weeks and months, can lower your credit scores.
New Accounts. When you open a new line of credit, it effectively raises the amount of available credit that you have available regardless of if you use that credit or not. Having extra credit available has the possibility of lowering your credit score because it raises your risk of defaulting. Consider a person who has $20,000 in available credit versus the person who has $2,000 in available credit. Both have the ability to fully max out their cards and use all available credit. So the person with the higher amount of available credit is more of a risk.
Even if you plan to close the account right away, this can also ding your credit scores. Too much account activity of any kind can lower your credit scores. If you don’t plan to use credit for a major purchase in coming months, your scores should have time to improve before you need access to your credit. However, if you plan to buy a new car, a new house, or apply for a loan of any kind in the coming months, you may want to think twice about doing this type of assignment.
Is It Worth It? Some of these assignments offer significant compensation for your time and effort, with many paying over $100. However, for the time and effort to not just open the account, but to follow up and close it as well as to deal with the credit repercussions, every mystery shopper should ask themselves if this assignment is worth it? Again, this will go back not just to pay, but also to if your credit situation is already in a precarious state as well as if you will need access to new credit in the next few months.
There is much more to think about before you accept this type of assignment. Most of these assignments pay well, so it is worth the time to at least give these assignments a moment’s thought to reflect on how worthwhile they will be for your unique situation.

JM Ridgway’s reputation on Mystery Shop Forum:

Where to sign up and what the process entails:
To sign up with JM Ridgway, go here:  http://www.homejobslistings.com
The first step takes you to a “Fraud Alert” page, warning potential new shoppers of the standard mystery shopping scam/spam emails, many of which have been stealing JM Ridgway’s name (sometimes also going by “Ridgway Shoppers”) in an attempt at authenticity.  Of course, these crooks steal the names of many legitimate mystery shop companies in that attempt.
Included in the alert is an example of the spammy emails, and an overview of how the spammers generally conduct business.  Shoppers are, of course, advised to not respond to these emails; and most importantly, to NOT deposit any checks that may be received if they do, without having their bank verify their authenticity (which will never happen).

The company also gives the twice-stated request to please NOT forward them your spam– they’re already aware of it, and there’s “absolutely nothing” they can do regarding the fact that you’ve received spam anyway.  (Makes sense.)  They do provide links to several agencies who are able to investigate these spammers, and suggest that you report it to them as soon as possible before the crooks have a chance to change their contact information.
You must click to confirm that you’ve read the warning, and still wish to proceed with the registration process.  This takes you to a “Shopper Application Overview” page.  Information here includes an abbreviated version of some of the most basic stuff new shoppers need to know, including information about communicating with schedulers, assignment of shops, conducting shops and completing reports, and payments.
Once again, in order to proceed, you must click to confirm you’ve read and accept the information on this page.  This takes you to the formal Independent Contractor Agreement (ICA).  This covers the general things most ICA’s do, such as Shopper Risk/Injury, Reading and Submission of Surveys, Shopper Compensation and Advances, Confidentiality Agreement, Receipts/Invoices and Copies, and a “Special Note” to shoppers.
Interesting to note, is that while the guidelines for every shop I’ve ever conducted for this company state that reports must be submitted by 9 AM the day after the shop was conducted; the ICA says reports are to be submitted within 24 hours of the completion of the shop.  Something else I found interesting:  the ICA states that shoppers may request an advance for required shop purchases.  This is something you never see in individual shop guidelines.
To proceed from here, you must click that you agree with and accept all of the terms of the ICA.  This link opens a new tab, from which you to create your SASSIE account for JM Ridgway; and takes you through the standard SASSIE registration process of filling in your basic information:  contact, demographics, payment.  There’s also the place for you to fill in area (phone) codes in which you shop, and the SASSIE Privacy Policy.  Once you’re finished with this, you just click “Sign Me Up!” and then must verify your new account from the email which will be generated.
As I recall, there is no additional information required, such as writing samples or an “Extended Profile”, once you confirm your account.  Obviously, I couldn’t go through the sign-up process again; and I couldn’t find any information on the company’s website about if there are additional requirements such as this.
What others have to say — an overview of JM Ridgway’s reputation on Mystery Shop Forum:
For a while, this company had quite the reputation on forums, including this one, of being a slow — sometimes VERY slow — payer.  Their stated payment schedule used to be 90-days — and shoppers reported almost unfailingly having to send an email to the company on day 91, to “remind” them that payment was owed.  However, once “reminded”, shoppers report that payment was almost always received the next business day.
Starting a little over a year ago, shoppers began reporting improved payment experiences, including that the company shortened their stated payment schedule as described earlier.  Many shoppers were happy to report receiving their payments not only on-time, according to new payment schedule; but unprompted.
The most recent payment complaint was posted in March of this year; however, the poster making the complaint hadn’t even waited the for the full stated payment timeline to elapse.  This may have been an inadvertent miscalculation on the part of the poster.
Another thing some forum members complained about, was this company’s practice of including harshly-worded, emphatically-stated, and heavy-handed warnings, and even threats, to shoppers — often repeated over and over, and always in large multi-colored fonts — prominently featured in the printable shop questionnaires.  Lately, though, the company seems to have toned this down quite a bit; which has been noted and appreciated.  Although annoying and tiresome, I never actually found them offensive as some other shoppers did (but I’m easy that way).

Other personal experiences:
Even during the time this company was having payment issues, I enjoyed working for them.  Was it annoying to have to “remind” them to pay me, on the 91st day after the job(s), every single time?  Absolutely.  However, at least when I sent my “reminder”, I had the money in my PayPal account within 24 hours.
Except once, at the end of a year, they mailed me a check for a large number of jobs they’d owed me for.  They did email to let me know the “check was in the mail”, and I was thinking, “Oh, boy — here we go… “ because even when that’s the truth, it sounds, well, you know.
But I was happy when it arrived promptly.  I was mildly concerned when it was a handwritten personal check, with no stub or anything; but JM Ridgway had always made good on all payments; and everything indeed turned out just fine.  That was the only time I wasn’t paid via PayPal, which was puzzling (and PayPal would have been far more convenient); but whatever — I got my money.  :)
One time the company even paid a little early at Christmas time, which was very appreciated.
Another thing I like about this company:  in my experience, they advocate for their shoppers.
Once I posted a fairly and reasonably stated complaint about a payment issue, right here on MSForum.  I was contacted the same day by someone from JM Ridgway.  Not because they were upset I’d made a public post, no; but instead to start the process of fixing things.  (The “reasonable” and “fair” parts of my post probably helped my case, I’d venture to guess. :))
There was another time when an associate I’d shopped at one of the mattress stores made some ridiculous claims about my behavior during the shop, as an excuse for why he’d missed a couple of key points of the presentation he was expected to provide.  The associate claimed to have figured out who I was, and went on to assert that I’d been jumping around on the beds and other ridiculous things of that nature during the shop.  I was contacted via email by someone at JM Ridgway, along with a forwarded copy of the associate’s email in which he made these allegations.
After recovering from falling out of my chair due to laughing so hard; I explained to the contact person at JM Ridgway that the associate’s allegations were patently impossible, due not only to the fact that I’m not an idiot — but also due to a physical disability.  The JM Ridgway contact said they’d take care of things, and apparently they did — because I was paid for the shop.  (Of course, I would have loved to hear how things went down, too, though.)
Another thing I’ve appreciated is that when I’ve participated in special projects a couple of times, both Frank and Scott, the CEO and the President, have emailed me personally to not only make sure I had all of the information I needed, but to thank me in advance (and once after the fact as well) for my hard work.  They were very pleasant to correspond with, and it was nice to know of their confidence in me before setting out on the shops.
After one set of special projects, the reviewer sent a special note of appreciation for my thorough reports as well as the extensive effort I had to make in order to meet all shop requirements, due to the circumstances of a couple of the locations.

Rapper Rick Ross and his bodyguard were arrested Wednesday morning

The slaying of nine African-Americans in a Charleston, S.C., church last week, with an avowed white supremacist charged with their murders, was a particularly savage case.

WASHINGTON — In the 14 years since Al Qaeda carried out attacks on New York and the Pentagon, extremists have regularly executed smaller lethal assaults in the United States, explaining their motives in online manifestos or social media rants.
But the breakdown of extremist ideologies behind those attacks may come as a surprise. Since Sept. 11, 2001, nearly twice as many people have been killed by white supremacists, anti government fanatics and other non-Muslim extremists than by radical Muslims: 48 have been killed by extremists who are not Muslim, compared with 26 by self-proclaimed jihadists, according to a count by New America, a Washington research center.
The slaying of nine African-Americans in a Charleston, S.C., church last week, with an avowed white supremacist charged with their murders, was a particularly savage case. But it is only the latest in a string of lethal attacks by people espousing racial hatred, hostility to government and theories such as those of the “sovereign citizen” movement, which denies the legitimacy of most statutory law. The assaults have taken the lives of police officers, members of racial or religious minorities and random civilians.
http://www.homejobslistings.com

Non-Muslim extremists have carried out 19 such attacks since Sept. 11, according to the latest count, compiled by David Sterman, a New America program associate, and overseen by Peter Bergen, a terrorism expert. By comparison, seven lethal attacks by Islamic militants have taken place in the same period.
If such numbers are new to the public, they are familiar to police officers. A survey to be published this week asked 382 police and sheriff’s departments nationwide to rank the three biggest threats from violent extremism in their jurisdiction. About 74 percent listed anti government violence, while 39 percent listed “Al Qaeda-inspired” violence, according to the researchers, Charles Kurzman of the University of North Carolina and David Schanzer of Duke University.
http://www.homejobslistings.com
“Law enforcement agencies around the country have told us the threat from Muslim extremists is not as great as the threat from right-wing extremists,” said Dr. Kurzman, whose study is to be published by the Triangle Center on Terrorism and Homeland Security and the Police Executive Research Forum.
John G. Horgan, who studies terrorism at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, said the mismatch between public perceptions and actual cases has become steadily more obvious to scholars.
“There’s an acceptance now of the idea that the threat from jihadi terrorism in the United States has been overblown,” Dr. Horgan said. “And there’s a belief that the threat of right-wing, anti government violence has been underestimated.”
Counting terrorism cases is a notoriously subjective enterprise, relying on shifting definitions and judgment calls.
If terrorism is defined as ideological violence, for instance, should an attacker who has merely ranted about religion, politics or race be considered a terrorist? A man in Chapel Hill, N.C., who was charged with fatally shooting three young Muslim neighbors had posted angry critiques of religion, but he also had a history of outbursts over parking issues. (New America does not include this attack in its count.)
Likewise, what about mass killings in which no ideological motive is evident, such as those at a Colorado movie theater and a Connecticut elementary school in 2012? The criteria used by New America and most other research organizations exclude such attacks, which have cost more lives than those clearly tied to ideology.
Some killings by non-Muslims that most experts would categorize as terrorism have drawn only fleeting news media coverage, never jelling in the public memory. But to revisit some of the episodes is to wonder why.
In 2012, a neo-Nazi named Wade Michael Page entered a Sikh temple in Wisconsin and opened fire, killing six people and seriously wounding three others. Mr. Page, who died at the scene, was a member of a white supremacist group called the Northern Hammerskins.
In another case, in June 2014, Jerad and Amanda Miller, a married couple with radical anti government and neo-Nazi views, entered a Las Vegas pizza restaurant and fatally shot two police officers who were eating lunch. On the bodies, they left a swastika, a flag inscribed with the slogan “Don’t tread on me” and a note saying, “This is the start of the revolution.” Then they killed a third person in a nearby Walmart.
And, as in the case of jihadist plots, there have been sobering close calls. In November 2014 in Austin, Tex., a man named Larry McQuilliams fired more than 100 rounds at government buildings that included the Police Headquarters and the Mexican Consulate. Remarkably, his shooting spree hit no one, and he was killed by an officer before he could try to detonate propane cylinders he had driven to the scene.
Some Muslim advocates complain that when the perpetrator of an attack is not Muslim, media commentators quickly focus on the question of mental illness.
“With non-Muslims, the media bends over backward to identify some psychological traits that may have pushed them over the edge,” said Abdul Cader Asmal, a retired physician and a longtime spokesman for Boston’s Muslim community. “Whereas if it’s a Muslim, the assumption is that they must have done it because of their religion.”
On several occasions since President Obama took office, efforts by government agencies to conduct research on right-wing extremism have run into resistance from Republicans, who suspected an attempt to smear conservatives.
A 2009 report by the Department of Homeland Security, which warned that an ailing economy and the election of the first black president might prompt a violent reaction from white supremacists, was withdrawn in the face of conservative criticism. Its main author, Daryl Johnson, later accused the department of “gutting” its staffing for such research.
William Braniff, the executive director of the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism at the University of Maryland, said the outsize fear of jihadist violence reflects memories of Sept. 11, the daunting scale of sectarian conflict overseas and wariness of a strain of Islam that seems alien to many Americans.
“We understand white supremacists,” he said. “We don’t really feel like we understand Al Qaeda, which seems too complex and foreign to grasp.”
The contentious question of biased perceptions of terrorist threats dates back at least two decades, to the truck bombing that tore apart the federal building in Oklahoma City in April 1995. Some early media speculation about the attack assumed that it had been carried out by Muslim militants. The arrest of Timothy McVeigh, an anti government extremist, quickly put an end to such theories.
The bombing, which killed 168 people, including 19 children, remains the second-deadliest terrorist attack in American history, though its toll was dwarfed by the roughly 3,000 killed on Sept 11.
“If there’s one lesson we seem to have forgotten 20 years after Oklahoma City, it’s that extremist violence comes in all shapes and sizes,” said Dr. Horgan, the University of Massachusetts scholar. “And very often it comes from someplace you’re least suspecting.”

Can you really make money doing Mystery Shopping

“Did you enjoy the meal?” asks Patricia as she drives out of the parking lot.
“It was awesome,” says Alice. “Especially because it was free. Thank you for inviting me.”
“It was my pleasure,” responds Patricia. “I needed a guest after my friend canceled.”
Alice inquires, “Can you tell me more about mystery shopping?”
“Sure,” Patricia replies. “What do you want to know?”
Quickly, she says, Can you really make money doing this? Can anyone do this? What places are shopped?”
Patricia chuckles as she replies, “You want to know everything, don’t you?”
Alice pauses and says tentatively, “Well, I just found out you are doing this and would like to know a little more about it.”
“Of course,” Patricia responds. “With some effort, anyone can do it and make money. I’ve been doing this for a few years and love it. I like to think of it like a job that has some perks, like a good meal.”
Alice points to a fast food restaurant they are passing. “For example, is that place shopped?”
“Yes, it is,” answers Patricia as she stops at a traffic light.
Alice then indicates a gas station across the intersection. “How about that gas station? We have them where I live.”
Patricia smiles slightly as she replies, “Yes, that one is also shopped. I’ll tell you what. There are a lot of stores on the road home. I’ll point out all the places that are shopped along the way and you can count them.”
Alice perks up as she replies, “Sure. I can do that. Two places are on the list already.”
“That’s right,” says Patricia as she accelerates from the light.
A few minutes later as the car turns onto a highway entrance, Alice exclaims, “Wow! Forty-four stores in just a three or four mile stretch! That’s a lot of places. All sorts of places are mystery shopped. Even the post office!”
“Yes. That’s right,” says Patricia. “That was an area with lots of strip malls and retail stores. It isn’t like that everywhere. Typically, the more built up the area, the more mystery shops there are.”
Alice says, “There are plenty of stores where I live. Tell me where to sign up.”
“Sure,” replies Patricia. “But it isn’t quite that simple. There are more than one hundred mystery shopping companies (MSCs) that operate in this country alone.”
Alice says, “Can you tell me which companies shop a few of my favorite stores?”
“I wish I could,” sighs Patricia as she responds. “You see, when I signed up for the companies they had me sign an agreement that prohibits me from disclosing what stores, we call them clients, are shopped by which MSC.”
“OMG!” exclaims Alice. “I had no idea. Why would they possibly do that?”
Patricia responds, “I think it has to do with reducing fraud. Keeping that information secret tries to prevent employees from having their friends sign up and give falsely positive evaluations.”
“Hmmm. I get it,” says Alice as she slumps in her seat. “But you had to get a start somewhere. How did you do it?”
http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-7761657-10855599-1415232613000
Patricia responds, “I signed up with lots of MSCs from a list I found online.”
Alice exclaims, “Oh my! That sounds like a lot of work.”
“It was,” replies Patricia. “It took a lot of time, but it really is the best way.”
Alice says, “How did you know which ones to sign up for? How did you know if they have work where you live?”
“Those are excellent questions. Let me think about it for a moment,” replies Patricia as she passes another slow moving car.
http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-7761657-10855599-1415232613000

After a few minutes, Patricia resumes the conversation. “Alice, I’ll tell you what I can do. I can give you five MSCs to get you started. They all have lots of shops around the country and anyone can apply. When we get home, I’ll enter the restaurant report and you can fire up your laptop and sign up for these companies.”
“Great!” says Alice. “Can I get some shops scheduled for next week when I go home?”
Patricia replies, “There’s a great chance you can do that because these companies have lots of shops around the country. I know for sure you can get some for tomorrow around here. You can borrow the car and go.”
“Awesome!” replies Alice. She looks at her lipstick in the mirror and asks thoughtfully, “Only five? What makes these so special?”
Patricia says, “These are probably the five largest MSCs in the country. Their clients are lots of chain restaurants, gas stations, cellphone stores, etc.. So they have lots of shops nationwide.”
Alice slowly and thoughtfully says, “That makes sense.”
Patricia continues, “In addition, you can self-assign many of their shops.”
“Self-assign?” Alice interjects, “What’s that?”
Patricia replies, “This is the ability to simply pick a shop from the job board for yourself instead of asking a scheduler to award you the shop. That way you don’t have to wait for an answer and possibly be denied because an experienced shopper also applied and was chosen over you.”
Alice says, “That sounds good, but as a beginner, I might need some training. It’s hard to remember all the stuff you had to do in the restaurant.”
Smiling, Patricia replies, “You’re right. Training is important. One of the five uses a sort of interactive virtual reality that visually takes you through the steps of a shop. I think it is terrific training for a beginner.”
“That sounds great,” says Alice. “So you think that with just these five I can get started?”
“Absolutely,” answers Patricia. “Let’s review. With these five you get lots of shops, locations that are probably all over the country, the ability to self-assign for many of them, and you can sign up and get shops for as soon as tomorrow in this area. I think that about covers it. Oh, and you can also check to see what is in your city to line up some for when you go home.”
“Awesome!” Alice says. “I can’t wait to get started.”
“Well, we are just about home now.” Patricia smiles as she pulls into the driveway. “I’ll tell you the names inside.”

The at-home work force is increasing

The at-home work force is increasing exponentially every year. As more and more people begin working from home, the lines and definitions between jobs and a business are beginning to get blurred. But, there is a difference between a home business and a work-at-home job. Keep reading for a clear outline of these basic distinctions.
Basically, a home based business is any business where the primary office is located in someone’s home – usually the owner’s. In fact, most companies start out this way – from simple tinkering in the garage to typing away in the spare room. From Microsoft to Ben & Jerry’s, many successful business got their start the home-based way. If you are planning on launching your own home business and being your own boss, make sure that it’s legal. While most zoning laws won’t crack down on a basic home office, they will lay down the law when it comes to a noisy auto repair business, illegal daycare or opening a store-front on your lawn.

http://www.homejobslistings.com
 http://www.homejobslistings.com
Once your home-based business begins to earn income, you will need to begin thinking about registering your business, filing business taxes, and essentially running your home-based business in a legal and professional manner.
Meanwhile, a work-at-home job is a little different. Unlike a business where you manage yourself, in an at-home job you are responsible to a supervisor. Whether you do legal transcription, bookkeeping, fund raising, customer service, programming, or web design – if you are working solely for an outside business, a business with offices outside of your home, then you are working an at-home job. A work-at-home job may allow you to direct your hours and workspace, but the essential control and direction of the business will be out of your hands and that is the primary difference between a home business and a work-at-home job.

Some Mystery Shoppers work several times a week, doing these fun and exciting jobs.
You're probably asking, if Mystery Shopping is so fun and easy, why isn't everyone doing it? Well, for starters, not that many people know how to get access to Mystery Shopping jobs. Although there have been news stories featuring Mystery Shoppers in the major media such as NBC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, Time Magazine, Yahoo, and more, very few people actually go and do the hard work it takes to research the good companies who are hiring Mystery Shoppers today.
That's where we come in. Our editorial staff has been involved in the Mystery Shopping industry since 2004. We know who the "good guys" are, and who to avoid. The bottom line is, if you are serious about getting paid to shop, you really have two choices: 1) Go it alone and try to figure it all out yourself (not recommended); or, 2) Join a membership site such as Elite Mystery Shopper where we've already done the hard work and you can instantly learn what you need to know and start registering for Mystery Shopper jobs with the major Mystery Shopping companies right away.
So, yes, you could go to the "School of Hard Knocks" and figure the industry all out all by yourself, slowly over a period of time (possibly months), or you can have all the important information at your fingertips right now.
Staying on top of the latest trends and opportunities in the Mystery Shopping industry takes time and effort.

Are you able to go into a store and have interactions with employees, take note of the cleanliness (or lack thereof), and write up a brief report detailing your shopping experience? If so, continue reading on, because those are the exact traits we look for in new Mystery Shoppers.
Major companies spend millions of dollars every year keeping track of their customer service abilities and their general appearance, because they know that customers will not return to their stores if the employees are rude, or the floors dirty, or the shopping experience is in any way unpleasant. That's where you come in. Mystery Shoppers are a highly valuable resource for major brands to rely on, to keep up their awareness of how they are perceived by customers.
