The Basics of Marketing is a vast field and the trends, activities and organizations are constantly changing and evolving so it would not be wise to define preset guidelines to the basics of marketing.  It is essentially the positioning of a product, which a customer needs in a particular place at a price that the customer sees value for money for the product/service. 







Any product/service that is able to address the above has successfully marketed itself. The list might seem relatively simple but there are several contributors that lead to a seemingly simple desirable outcome and it takes extensive research and accurate analysis of the data targeted and created in the demographic basis which the pricing is determined. 



It is worthwhile to note that marketing is the study of several factors and there are times when the most expensive marketing fails to return value for money, on close inspection it would not be hard to find that one or more of the primary contributors have been overlooked. How marketing is approached can broadly be classified into one of the two categories mentioned below. 







Most often companies create a product that they think the customer needs and then spend money and crucial budget on getting the customer to accept the product/service. It is not about what they think the customer needs, it is about knowing what the customer demand is and then working on it. Get New Business From Old. Ask existing clients for more biz before you try warming up a stone cold lead. Ask the happy clients for referrals to people they know that you don’t and be sure to keep track of who referred whom.



Talk About Your Failures. Seriously! It builds credibility. Everyone can’t be perfect all the time, and when you can tell a prospect why you lost a client and what you’ve learned it’s a welcome change. They appreciate not getting the usual hot air & razzle-dazzle.




Offer a “Loss-Leader”. People are less and less apt to buy impulsively from a person if they don’t have a good feeling about them. Offering a loss-leader allows the relationship to mature over time. This is very important in B2B clients. (Loss-leader is the practice of offering a product or service at a considerable discount and loss of profit to attract future business.)


Get Sold Yourself. Pick the most successful competitors in your area and let them sell you. Play customer and be aware of how you feel during each step, and see why their approach works so well. Auto-makers buy each others cars and break them down to nuts and bolts. You can do the same thing in your space.



Pitch an Enemy. Find the most disagreeable son of a gun you can find and pitch him or her.  Let them be as nasty as they please, then analyze later if anything they said had any merit. Be totally unemotional, and don’t defend anything. You’ll learn where you’re lacking after doing this.


Start an E-mail Newsletter. This is much like #5. Give them useful information week in and week out, or month in and month out. Make them happy to see your name in the “from” field. If they only hear from you when you want something, they’ll turn you off when they hear from you.


Offer Testimonials. Satisfied clients or customers can say things about you that you can never believable say about yourself. Use the person’s full name if possible when doing this. “KM from Buffalo” isn’t nearly as strong as “Kenneth Moore from Buffalo”.
Ask Questions. I can’t emphasize enough how important and how underused this tip is in business. Simply allowing people to verbalize their needs makes them happy and tells them you listen. It also allows you to hone in on the points to make when it’s your turn to talk
 Pitch a Stranger. It’s like bad advertising when you blow hot air when pitching to a new prospect. In face-to-face mediating you’ve got to know what to say, and say it with conviction.

Now that we’ve covered the approach you’re going to take in your ads let’s take a look at “Aspects of the Approach”. These are actually subsections that needed a place to live, but don’t tell anyone.

 
  • Tone & Personality:
  • Break the Limits.
  • Turn Adversity Into Advantage.
  • Use What’s Already Available.
  • Can the Approach Work?
  • Frugality Makes You Timely.
  • Watch Your Language.You have to make a decision about your ad relating to its tone and personality.  What disposition/character/behavior/or attitude is going to be the most effective? 


Now tone is the undercurrent of your ad or the mood.  Personality is the make-up of the ad’s character.  It’s important to think about this because some advertisers ignore it and when they pull the pieces together (picture, copy, etc) the ad doesn’t project anything.

For instance think of the grabber line being, “Big budget delivers big results.”  Hmm?  Just as money can’t solve all social ills, big budgets don’t automatically create inventive advertising.   Many times we’ve seen an enormous budget plus a rotten idea = a huge failure.  Yet, there are times when we see a small budget plus a first-rate idea = marvelous success.  Be prepared to make do and still make it fantastic.

If you have a small ad, demonstrate that you’re better than the space you’re in.  Remember the prospect doesn’t care about the size of the ad, he only cares about what you’re doing for him.

If your client insists on showing woodchucks in his jewelry ad, turn out the best woodchuck jewelry ad ever.  You’ll get points for originality, and because it’s a “zag” you’ll probably get results.

Before you spend a lot on photos and illustrations, look at what you have lying around.  It’s free.

Not to discourage free form thinking, but you should reject approaches that demand too much BLT (budget, labor, and time).  Instead, prepare ads that require your talent and not months and bucks.

The smaller the production budget, the sooner your ad can get in the market.  This is the “Rule of Thumb.” The reason is because you’re not relying on other resources.  So, unchain your ads from expenses and move fast.

This is worthwhile because if economic conditions suddenly change (and they will), you can quickly respond with a new ad message that addresses the new economy.  You might decide to say, “Now more than ever, it pays to use our product.”  You’ll again leave your competitors in the dust because they’re tied to expensive ads and long production timetables.

Most people don’t realize the power that’s packed in language.  One misused phrase can upset thousands of people, so keep you antennas up and use your judgment.

For instance, use nothing at the expense of a certain group.  This will offend people.  Instead, show that an ad can get results from scores of readers and a smile from every one of them.

Don’t make fun of the prospect in a “we’re just kidding” way.  He’s not paying much attention to your ad, so he won’t get the subtle nuances of your wit – only enough to be insulted.


If you can follow these hints you should be able to work out a “cracker-jack” ad for either yourself or a client.  Next week we’ll take a look at handling the media.

3 Types of Bank Assignments

As a mystery shopper, you know you can find assignments in all types of public places. From restaurants and retail stores to gas stations, movie theaters, health clubs, and so much more. Many assignments leave mystery shoppers feeling flustered and stressed out. Grocery stores, retail stores, and even many restaurants are often just plain crowded, and there is nothing relaxing about wheeling your shopping cart through crowded grocery store aisles or doing a restaurant assignment during peak lunch times. For many mystery shoppers, a bank assignment usually can provide you with a great change of pace. Here’s what you need to know:

Bank Teller Assignments. Often, bank assignments will have you deposit a check or cash into your account from the drive thru lanes. I have completed a wide variety of jobs for Market Force. I started out doing cell phonejobs where I would go undercover and pretend I was interested in obtaining a new cell phone. These were the perfect jobs for me to start mystery shopping because they are very easy and I could perform many of them in one day which makes it quite worth it when the day is complete! I also perform telephone mystery shops, mainly to banks, and I will call and get a name and determine if the customer service rep was doing their job correctly.

Another type of job I perform is with the bigger companies such as tire manufacturers and book stores that may need auditing, which means you would contact the manager of the store to help you count merchandise on shelves and let the company know what is out of stock. This type of job is very easy and you get to interact with the managers of some major companies. You get the respect of the managers and a job that can be repeated throughout the year.

Working with the schedulers of Market Force is a breeze. If you have any questions you would contact the scheduler for the specific job and they will get back to you in a reasonable amount of time. They really are very helpful and can steer you in the right direction if you get stuck with anything, such as printing paperwork, or a question about the specific job you are performing. They respond quickly and efficiently.

I have a high regard for Market Force. They have worked with me over the years and if I make mistakes I correct them quickly and they take this into great consideration since no one is perfect! So you won’t have to worry if you happen to make a mistake, unless it is quite major, then this company will work with you to correct your mistake. Save on Gas with Mystery Shopping

Mystery shoppers have been watching gas prices creep back upward for months with much dismay. The higher gas prices climb, the more money mystery shoppers have to pay to travel to do assignment site visits. With gas prices up almost $1.00 per gallon in many locations in just the last few months, if not more, many mystery shoppers are really starting to feel some pain at the pump each time they fill up.

They find companies with assignments available, and send them straight to you.

There are some steps you can take, however, to help take the sting out of those painful fill-ups. Here are some ideas:

Gas Station Assignments. There is nothing that will put a smile on  your face faster while you are standing there filling up your tank than knowing  you are getting reimbursed for your gas purchase! Now most gas station assignments will reimburse you for only a portion of your purchase, so don’t expect to walk away with $50 or $100 in gas for free! However, if you make an effort to pick up a few of these assignments each week on a regular basis, you will find that this really will make quite a difference in your overall gas expense for mystery shopping.

Top It Off. While most gas station assignments offer you a reimbursement on a portion of a fill up, there aren’t many that will reimburse you for the cost of a full tank of gas. It’s fairly common to see a $5 or $10 reimbursement, plus a small fee for your assignment pay.

Be sure not to “leave money on the table”, so to speak. Don’t show up at the gas station assignment with almost a full tank of gas and unable to get your full reimbursement on your purchase. If you are bone dry the day or two before your assignment, only fill up a quarter or a half of a tank to leave room for the gas purchase you will be reimbursed for.

Tie A String Around Your Finger! Whether you simply don’t like the extra clutter in your car or you are trying to be more “green”, many people these days opt to not print out the receipt at the gas pump. Keep in mind that you will need to print out the receipt to get reimbursed for your gas purchase. So avoid the urge to go into auto-mode at the gas pump and click “no receipt.” If you need to literally tie a string around your finger to remember to print your receipt, do it!

Say Cheese! Most gas station assignments will require you to snap a few photos of the exterior of the store from different angles. Many mystery shoppers prefer to do this at busier times of the day to  avoid being seen. This can seem fairly illogical, as with many cars and drivers at the gas station, you stand a better chance of being seen. Yet it is far easier to blend into the crowd and not be singled out when the gas station is packed with motorists. You also stand a less likely chance of the gas station clerk glancing out the window and catching you snapping photos if he is busy helping other customers.

The time of day you choose to shop will be up to the assignment requirements as well as your discretion. Just keep in mind that you will likely need to snap photos incognito and think through if you’ll be more comfortable in a crowded or uncrowded environment.

Skip The Goodies! Many gas station assignments also require you to make a small purchase inside the store and interact briefly with the gas station clerk. It may be tempting to buy that candy bar or a soda, but if you are strapped for cash, you may want to make your reimbursed purchase towards a necessity like milk, eggs, or even fruit that are sold in many gas stations these days.

Double-booking It. If you have to be out on the road and burning gas, you might as well make that trip worth your while. With gas prices so high right now, it absolutely makes sense to schedule mystery shopping assignments with location in mind. A great idea is to look for several assignments in the same shopping mall, outlet mall, or retail center so you can drive to one location and complete several site visits. Another idea is to pick up assignments that you can complete en route to places you already need to travel, such as on your way to work or to your daughter’s ballet lesson. You can also try to find assignments that serve a double purpose for you, such as a grocery store assignment where you can pick up your groceries for the week while you are also working on an assignment, too.

When gas prices get as high as they currently are, and especially given the fact that they are only expected to go higher yet, you really have to make some adjustments to your mystery shopping habits so that you can avoid pain at the pump. When you take steps to follow some of these tips, you will find that you can continue to make great money as a mystery shopper without spending quite so much in gas, and this means increasing your overall profits!

The first step takes you to a “Fraud Alert” page, warning potential new shoppers of the standard mystery shopping scam/spam emails, many of which have been stealing JM Ridgway’s name (sometimes also going by “Ridgway Shoppers”) in an attempt at authenticity.  Of course, these crooks steal the names of many legitimate mystery shop companies in that attempt.
Included in the alert is an example of the spammy emails, and an overview of how the spammers generally conduct business.  Shoppers are, of course, advised to not respond to these emails; and most importantly, to NOT deposit any checks that may be received if they do, without having their bank verify their authenticity (which will never happen).


The company also gives the twice-stated request to please NOT forward them your spam– they’re already aware of it, and there’s “absolutely nothing” they can do regarding the fact that you’ve received spam anyway.  (Makes sense.)  They do provide links to several agencies who are able to investigate these spammers, and suggest that you report it to them as soon as possible before the crooks have a chance to change their contact information.
You must click to confirm that you’ve read the warning, and still wish to proceed with the registration process.  This takes you to a “Shopper Application Overview” page.  Information here includes an abbreviated version of some of the most basic stuff new shoppers need to know, including information about communicating with schedulers, assignment of shops, conducting shops and completing reports, and payments.
Once again, in order to proceed, you must click to confirm you’ve read and accept the information on this page.  This takes you to the formal Independent Contractor Agreement (ICA).  This covers the general things most ICA’s do, such as Shopper Risk/Injury, Reading and Submission of Surveys, Shopper Compensation and Advances, Confidentiality Agreement, Receipts/Invoices and Copies, and a “Special Note” to shoppers.
Interesting to note, is that while the guidelines for every shop I’ve ever conducted for this company state that reports must be submitted by 9 AM the day after the shop was conducted; the ICA says reports are to be submitted within 24 hours of the completion of the shop.  Something else I found interesting:  the ICA states that shoppers may request an advance for required shop purchases.  This is something you never see in individual shop guidelines.
To proceed from here, you must click that you agree with and accept all of the terms of the ICA.  This link opens a new tab, from which you to create your SASSIE account for JM Ridgway; and takes you through the standard SASSIE registration process of filling in your basic information:  contact, demographics, payment.  There’s also the place for you to fill in area (phone) codes in which you shop, and the SASSIE Privacy Policy.  Once you’re finished with this, you just click “Sign Me Up!” and then must verify your new account from the email which will be generated.
As I recall, there is no additional information required, such as writing samples or an “Extended Profile”, once you confirm your account.  Obviously, I couldn’t go through the sign-up process again; and I couldn’t find any information on the company’s website about if there are additional requirements such as this.
What others have to say — an overview of JM Ridgway’s reputation on Mystery Shop Forum:
For a while, this company had quite the reputation on forums, including this one, of being a slow — sometimes VERY slow — payer.  Their stated payment schedule used to be 90-days — and shoppers reported almost unfailingly having to send an email to the company on day 91, to “remind” them that payment was owed.  However, once “reminded”, shoppers report that payment was almost always received the next business day.
Starting a little over a year ago, shoppers began reporting improved payment experiences, including that the company shortened their stated payment schedule as described earlier.  Many shoppers were happy to report receiving their payments not only on-time, according to new payment schedule; but unprompted.
The most recent payment complaint was posted in March of this year; however, the poster making the complaint hadn’t even waited the for the full stated payment timeline to elapse.  This may have been an inadvertent miscalculation on the part of the poster.
Another thing some forum members complained about, was this company’s practice of including harshly-worded, emphatically-stated, and heavy-handed warnings, and even threats, to shoppers — often repeated over and over, and always in large multi-colored fonts — prominently featured in the printable shop questionnaires.  Lately, though, the company seems to have toned this down quite a bit; which has been noted and appreciated.  Although annoying and tiresome, I never actually found them offensive as some other shoppers did (but I’m easy that way).

Other personal experiences:
Even during the time this company was having payment issues, I enjoyed working for them.  Was it annoying to have to “remind” them to pay me, on the 91st day after the job(s), every single time?  Absolutely.  However, at least when I sent my “reminder”, I had the money in my PayPal account within 24 hours.
Except once, at the end of a year, they mailed me a check for a large number of jobs they’d owed me for.  They did email to let me know the “check was in the mail”, and I was thinking, “Oh, boy — here we go… “ because even when that’s the truth, it sounds, well, you know.
But I was happy when it arrived promptly.  I was mildly concerned when it was a handwritten personal check, with no stub or anything; but JM Ridgway had always made good on all payments; and everything indeed turned out just fine.  That was the only time I wasn’t paid via PayPal, which was puzzling (and PayPal would have been far more convenient); but whatever — I got my money.  :)
One time the company even paid a little early at Christmas time, which was very appreciated.
Another thing I like about this company:  in my experience, they advocate for their shoppers.
Once I posted a fairly and reasonably stated complaint about a payment issue, right here on MSForum.  I was contacted the same day by someone from JM Ridgway.  Not because they were upset I’d made a public post, no; but instead to start the process of fixing things.  (The “reasonable” and “fair” parts of my post probably helped my case, I’d venture to guess. :))
There was another time when an associate I’d shopped at one of the mattress stores made some ridiculous claims about my behavior during the shop, as an excuse for why he’d missed a couple of key points of the presentation he was expected to provide.  The associate claimed to have figured out who I was, and went on to assert that I’d been jumping around on the beds and other ridiculous things of that nature during the shop.  I was contacted via email by someone at JM Ridgway, along with a forwarded copy of the associate’s email in which he made these allegations.
After recovering from falling out of my chair due to laughing so hard; I explained to the contact person at JM Ridgway that the associate’s allegations were patently impossible, due not only to the fact that I’m not an idiot — but also due to a physical disability.  The JM Ridgway contact said they’d take care of things, and apparently they did — because I was paid for the shop.  (Of course, I would have loved to hear how things went down, too, though.)
Another thing I’ve appreciated is that when I’ve participated in special projects a couple of times, both Frank and Scott, the CEO and the President, have emailed me personally to not only make sure I had all of the information I needed, but to thank me in advance (and once after the fact as well) for my hard work.  They were very pleasant to correspond with, and it was nice to know of their confidence in me before setting out on the shops.
After one set of special projects, the reviewer sent a special note of appreciation for my thorough reports as well as the extensive effort I had to make in order to meet all shop requirements, due to the circumstances of a couple of the locations.
